How to Layer Kitchen Lighting

A well-lit kitchen uses three layers: ambient lighting (ceiling lights or downlights) for general illumination, task lighting (under-cabinet lights) for worktops, and decorative lighting (pendants over an island) for atmosphere and style.

Pendant Lights Over a Kitchen Island

For a standard island (150–180cm), two pendants work beautifully. For longer islands over 200cm, three pendants create a balanced look. Hang them 70–80cm above the worktop surface.
